New Connections: Progress for the Barking Riverside District Centre
A new wayfinding systems has been designed for Barking Riverside’s emerging District Centre. Through a series of directional totems and “welcome” structures, our District Centre wayfinding will help visitors navigate around Barking Riverside when new facilities open later this year.
The District Centre will be Barking Riverside’s heart, home to the majority of amenities and the next phase of quality homes, as well as the location of both the London Overground station and the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers pier. In the long term, the area will ultimately evolve to become a mixed-use destination for new community facilities, cultural events, residential and commercial spaces.
Our wayfinding strategy aims to replicate the imagery and orientation systems that Londoners and visitors encounter throughout the capital, whilst still being unique and referencing the distinctive Barking Riverside brand – particularly evident through the angular caps that sit atop the totems.
The new totems will be constructed to signpost visitors to community buildings such as The Wilds and Rivergate Centre, as well as landmarks and amenities outside of the masterplan and into the wider Barking Riverside and Thames View neighbourhood.
Five totems will initially be erected, some of which will be digitally enabled to help display key community messages and also to provide up to date travel information. The design will eventually be extended holistically across the rest of the development to ensure a seamless experience for visitors onsite.
