What’s happening along the river? An update on improvements to Barking Riverside’s riverfront

Over the coming months, Barking Riverside Limited (BRL) and appointed contractors Mackley will begin works along Barking Riverside’s riverfront.

You might have heard these works referred to as the ‘foreshore works’. This important project will improve the area around the river and provide new public facilities.

The enhanced foreshore will offer a safer, greener, more usable riverfront, meaning you’ll be able to enjoy the river more – whether it’s evening walks along the Thames, summer picnics overlooking the water, or arriving by boat to Barking Riverside.

What are the benefits?

Living by the Thames is one of the things that makes Barking Riverside special. These works are about making the riverfront work better for everyone who lives here.

Once complete, there will be a number of benefits for residents and visitors, including:

• A continuous riverside walkway meandering alongside the Thames, providing a tranquil footpath next to the water.
• A terrace space offering tiered seating and sweeping views of the river – the upper level featuring a public square large enough for events, bordered by more outdoor seating.
• Increased access points to the river edge, where it’s safe to do so.
• A new play area ideal for families and children.
• Informal spaces for relaxing, socialising and watching the passing boats.
• Enhanced habitats for local wildlife, supporting biodiversity along the foreshore and protecting different species.

The works also include less visible, but equally important improvements, including flood protection and drainage improvements that will help unlock future development nearby, supporting more green spaces, community facilities and homes as Barking Riverside continues to grow.

Shaped by resident feedback

Community engagement has been central to shaping the foreshore design. Through consultation events and ongoing conversations, residents have shared how they want to use the riverfront and what matters most to them.

Your feedback has directly influenced decisions around accessibility for prams and wheelchair users, the balance between grassland and paving, and the importance of protecting local wildlife. You told us you wanted the riverfront to feel natural and open. In response, the design includes a mix of paved routes, softer green areas and a small boardwalk, allowing people to get closer to the river and its ecology without disturbing it.

What’s happening and when?

You’ll from February 2026 see activity along parts of the riverfront, including fencing, construction vehicles, and temporary changes to access in certain areas.

To undertake the first phase, we’ll need to divert Footpath 47 (the existing footpath along the foreshore). Many parts will remain open, and it will be fully reopened once works are completed.
