What's coming to Barking Riverside – a place that will become more

Barking Riverside is already a fantastic place to be, but the future promises so much more.

New Overground station opened in 2022

The Barking Riverside Overground station opened in 2022. This is an extension of the Gospel Oak to Barking line, directly linking Barking Riverside to both East and North London. The 5-minute journey to Barking station connects to the Hammersmith & City line, the District line and the C2C train from Essex to Fenchurch Street.

The new Overground station is located just a few minutes’ walk from the river Thames and the new Barking Riverside pier, for easy interchange.

The riverboat service provides daily commuter journeys at peak times, for a quick and unique way to access Central London.

A Healthy New Town

Barking Riverside is London's only 'Healthy New Town', a project led by the NHS to explore how the development of new places can provide an opportunity for healthier communities.

Just 10 sites across the country have been selected to take part in this project, and Barking Riverside is the only one in the capital.

Facilities, events and open spaces at Barking Riverside create an environment where physical and mental health is prioritised.

The Wellbeing Hub

A core project delivered as part of Barking Riverside’s Healthy New Town is the Wellbeing Hub.

Co-designed with the community, the new Wellbeing Hub will offer the chance to visit a GP, work out at the gym, get involved with community activities or enjoy a state-of-the-art indoor waterpark, all under one roof.

The £40 million Wellbeing Hub is developed in partnership with the NHS, BeFirst and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Riverside walks

Visitors and residents can enjoy 2 km of south-facing riverfront on the Thames, accessible for walks and cycling, as well as bird and seal watching.

A programme of works will improve the area with exciting lifestyle and leisure facilities, whilst preserving the unique wildlife that makes this a spot of high ecological value.

Diverse and vibrant District Centre

With thousands of people commuting through the District Centre for shopping or heading to the river, arriving here feels special. This commercial zone includes both the new Overground station and the riverboat pier and will evolve to become a destination point for new community facilities, cultural events and business opportunities.

The Wilds

The Wilds is a new multi-purpose community, ecology and event space, open to the public since Summer 2021.

The building hosts the GROUNDED coffee shop, a cooperative set up by local people. It is also home to the UK headquarters of Swedish company Envac, which manages the innovative vacuum waste disposal system across Barking Riverside.

The Wilds includes a variety of spaces that are available for public and private events, including a sunken garden. Co-working desks can be hired Monday to Friday, perfect for working-from-home days.

The Wilds regularly hosts workshops and events, find out more here.
