What's coming to Barking Riverside – a place that will become more

Barking Riverside is already a fantastic place to be, but the future promises so much more.

What began life as a small fishing and farming community, by the 20th century had progressed to be the centre for industry and home to the Barking Power Station complex. Now, through investment and placemaking, Barking Riverside will transform into one of the most exciting and inspiring places to live in London.

A Healthy New Town

As London’s only designated Healthy New Town, Barking Riverside is creating an environment where physical and mental health is prioritised, meaning facilities, events and open spaces will promote a healthier way of living.

New station opening in 2022

The London Overground line is extending to Barking Riverside with a new station opening. An extension of the Gospel Oak to Barking line, the extension will make Barking accessible in just 6 minutes. The new station is estimated to help create 40,000 more jobs for residents and businesses in the area.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers arriving Spring 2022

The riverboat service will provide daily commuter journeys at peak times, for a quick and unique way to access Central London.

The Wellbeing Hub

Co-designed with the community, the new Wellbeing Hub will offer the chance to visit a GP, work out at the gym, get involved with a range of community activities or enjoy a trip to a state-of-the-art indoor waterpark, all under one roof.

Riverside walks

A programme of works to the river’s foreshore will make this publicly accessible in order to become a Barking Riverside attraction that residents and visitors can enjoy. Once the foreshore is accessible, other lifestyle and leisure facilities can be provided overlooking the Thames.

Diverse and vibrant District Centre

The commercial zone is evolving to become a destination and a centre point for community facilities, cultural events and business opportunities.

The Wilds at Barking Riverside

A new Ecology Centre and public space, The Wilds hosts a regular programme of workshops, exhibitions and events. It features a coffee shop run by a local cooperative, co-working space and areas available to hire. The Wilds is now open to residents and visitors.
