Major infrastructure work is now underway as part of key planned improvements to Barking Riverside.

These require the temporary closure of Project Road to vehicle traffic and diversion of pedestrians.

Project Road closure starting 30th August

As part of the latest phase of road works to support the creation of a new public transport interchange and square outside Barking Riverside Station, we will be closing and realigning Project Road from Tuesday 30th August for up to 18 weeks. The work will be undertaken in phases to minimise the disruption to residents and visitors with temporary diversions ensuring pedestrian and vehicular access is maintained to all areas whilst the works are underway. Thank you for your patience and understanding whilst these important works are undertaken.

Phase 1 - Tuesday 30 August 2022 – Friday 30th September  

Project Road will be closed to pedestrians and vehicles from Renwick Road.

  • Vehicle traffic to/from Renwick Road will be diverted along the new road under the railway viaduct (Merz Road). This will provide access to/from Fielders Crescent and Riverside Campus.
  • Buses EL1 and EL3 (peak times) will be diverted along Merz Road. Bus stops are relocated to Merz Road providing access to the schools and station.
  • Pedestrian footpaths to the south of Project Road will remain open providing access between Barking Riverside Pier, Fielders Crescent and Renwick Road.

Phase 1

Phase 2 – Thursday 6th October - Friday 11th November

  • Pedestrian access to/from Barking Riverside Pier for Uber Boat by Thames Clipper services will temporarily be from the west via River Road/Renwick Road only.
  • Pedestrians walking to/from Fielders Crescent will need to use the temporary station access and pass through the station concourse or use the footpath along Merz Road to reach Renwick Road.
  • Buses EL1 and EL3 (peak times) diverted along Merz Road. Bus stops are relocated to Merz Road providing access to the schools and station.
  • Vehicle traffic between Renwick Road, Fielders Crescent and Riverside Campus will continue to be via Merz Road.
  • The BRL Project Office is accessed from River Road only via Project Road.

Phase 2

Phase 3 – Saturday 12th November – Saturday 3rd December  

  • Pedestrian access to/from Barking Riverside Pier for Uber Boat by Thames Clipper services will continue to be from the west via River Road/Renwick Road only.
  • Pedestrians access to/from Fielders Crescent will be via the temporary station access and pass through the station concourse or use the footpath along Merz Road to reach Renwick Road.
  • Buses EL1 and EL3 (peak times) diverted along Merz Road. Bus stops are relocated to Merz Road providing access to the schools and station.
  • Vehicle traffic between Renwick Road, Fielders Crescent and Riverside Campus will continue to use Merz Road.
  • Vehicle and pedestrian access to the BRL Project Office is via Project Road from Fielders Crescent

Phase 3

Phase 4 – Sunday 4th December to Saturday 7th January

  • No vehicle through route on Project Road
  • Vehicles to make use of Merz Road, under rail viaduct
  • Blue badge vehicle parking at Project Office via Project Road from Fielders Crescent
  • Pedestrian access to Project Office, riverfront public footpath and pier from both Fielders Crescent and River Road
  • Bus EL1 and EL3 (peak times) to continue to use Merz Road with Eastbound and Westbound relocated bus stops

Phase 5 - Sunday 8th January 2023 onwards

  • No vehicle through route on Project Road
  • Vehicles to make use of Merz Road, under rail viaduct
  • Blue badge vehicle parking at Project Office via Project Road from Fielders Crescent
  • Pedestrian access to Project Office, riverfront public footpath and pier from both Fielders Crescent and River Road
  • Bus EL1 and EL3 (peak times) to use Project Road with Eastbound and Westbound bus stops relocated from Merz Road to Station Square
