Community

Become part of a thriving community hub

Building a community is not just about building new homes; it is also about creating the correct infrastructure and environment for the residents, and providing links both within the community and between the community and its wider geographical location. At the heart of the development, the Rivergate Centre is a central hub for the community, forging links between existing and new residents. The Centre houses a café, leisure facilities, a health centre, places of worship, and sports facilities, including an AstroTurf football pitch, a netball/basketball court and a tennis court. These, in addition to the development’s new open spaces and parkland, will help inspire a thriving new community.

The Approach Includes:

Creating a unique co-production partnership with the community, through a Community Interest Company, to harness existing and emerging assets.

Collaborating with pioneering academics to create new knowledge on the contribution of green spaces and waterways to improving health and reducing health inequalities.

Applying the latest learning on ‘age-friendly’ built environments and public spaces, and ensuring Barking Riverside is liveable and inclusive for all ages.

Embedding new models of health and social care delivery and innovation, through Care City NHS Innovation Test Bed.

Supporting social regeneration and community cohesion between old and new communities.

Healthy Town, Healthy Lifestyle

Barking Riverside London has much to offer

Healthy Town, Healthy Lifestyle

Did you know that good urban planning and housing design promotes healthy lifestyles and can help prevent illness? It can also help older people to remain independent, healthy and, supported by the latest technology, to continue living in their own homes rather than in care homes.

Through careful architectural housing design and the latest urban planning ideas, we’ve ensured that Barking Riverside London provides the infrastructure for building a strong community and a healthy place to live, helping ensure longer, healthier, happier lives for you and your family.

Healthy new town

Barking Riverside London has been designated as a Healthy New Town. This is NHS England’s ambitious programme designed to significantly enhance the health of residents and to integrate health and care services within newly built communities.

The programme emphasises the important part that good housing and urban design plays in promoting healthy lifestyles and helping to prevent illness. It also helps older people to remain independent and healthy, supported by the latest technology to live in their own homes rather than in care homes.

By building a strong community and a healthy place to live, Barking Riverside London will help ensure a healthy future for its residents.

Barking Riverside London has much to offer

A key aim for Barking Riverside London is to create a friendly and healthy community for everyone who lives and works there, whatever their age.

It is the largest development in East London and, over the next 15 years, 10,800 new homes will be created. The Barking Riverside London Healthy New Town initiative encourages residents to live healthy and independent lives whilst having access to better local care when they need it.

Barking Riverside London will create a brand new neighbourhood, including 7 new schools, health centres, places of worship, community and sports facilities, open spaces and parkland and will also re-connect residents and visitors with over 2km of spectacular Thames waterfront.
